We have all been irritable at least a few times in our life. Some of us have a lot of irritation we need to work on. We all have those moments when everything is going well, and we are happy. Suddenly, you find out your fridge stopped working. You lose all the food in it. Not to mention, the money it will cost to replace the fridge and the food. There goes that great day you were having. You become irritated because life is busy. Money is tight. You have to take time off from work to get everything cleaned and ordered. You also need to buy more food.

There are many different types of irritation. All kinds of mental health issues can trigger irritation. Mental health is hard to control irritability. I have mentioned this in many posts. I believe we all need a counselor in our life. Alternatively, a life coach can also be beneficial.

Talking to a counselor or a life coach will help you to talk freely about your irritations without judgment. Finding the root of the irritation. Working on solving triggered irritation is life changing, not to mention feeling free. Family struggles or misunderstandings is also a huge cause for irritation, not to mention co-workers.

Now let’s talk about how to change ourselves when irritation sets in and ways to avoid the onset of irritation. Lack of sleep, to me, is the number one issue for irritation. You go to bed with a ton of issues going on in your head. You get four hours of sleep and you have a full busy day at work. Susie tells you that you are not doing something correctly and states she will do it yourself. You are probably pissed off because you know how to do it correctly as you have done it many times. You are also irritated because she used an irritated voice toward you. You can add to your irritation and let it worsen. Alternatively, you can talk to Susie and explain your lack of sleep. Honestly is the best form of calmness in your life.

I am guilty for being hangry and everything becomes irritable until I eat something. Quick fix… carry snacks with you, if there is a will, there is a way. Alcohol also is a huge cause of irritation. Over drinking can cause all sorts of irritation when we drink too much and are not truly ourselves. Know your limits. Feeling sick is also a cause of irritation. If you are really sick, try to distance yourself from people who irritate you.

Irritation will not go away fully from your life. It is manageable if you understand how you react to the irritation. You can change certain aspects of your life to not have so much irritation. If the same people continue to irritate you, talk to them. Alternatively, try to distance yourself from them as much as you can if talking does not help.

I would like to talk about deep breathing and calming the heart and mind down. Oh I love to do deep breathing. I even have an application on my phone to remind me to take time to do some deep breathing. Here is a tip I use for deep breathing. This tip has worked on many of my clients. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths. Inhale as much as you can without tensing up. As you exhale, relax your shoulders and body if you can. Relaxing your shoulders is the most important. When we become irritable/irritated we tense up.

I can discuss endlessly how to handle irritation. Yet, the most important way to lessen your irritation is to pay attention to what is irritating you. What are you doing at that time? Who or what is irritating you? Is there a way to lessen or stop what is irritating you? If you have trouble figuring this out, seek a counselor or life coach. We can lessen our irritability, but you can’t depend on others if the irritation involves people. You are the one in control of how you handle irritation with people. If something irritates you, like the story about the fridge, keep in mind, you will live through this mishap. Deep breathing. my friends.
