Attitude IS Everything

How we present ourselves in any situation sets the attitude anywhere at anytime. Our attitude reflects our behavior. If we walk into a room full of people with a smile, most will smile back when they look at us, and those smiling endorphins flow like a wildfire, which a great feeling. Our attitude affects others and how they size us up, yes….people do judge us on our first meeting regardless if you know the person or just met them.

When I counseled groups, I would always do a little skit. I would walk in the room with a very mad face stating I just wanted to get the group over with because I would be paid regardless and I just wasn’t in the mood to do a group. After I said this to them I would ask them how they felt about me and trust me….not very many of them had nice things to say to me. I did love it when some clients would ask me if I was having a rough day.

I would then excuse myself and let them know I’d be back in a minute, when I would come back I would be super excited and grateful to be with them. All their facial expressions would change to a happier disposition. I explained to them how important it is to set the mood regardless who you are with. We can either make our environment a happy one or we can make our environment a mad and/or sad one, it is all up to us.

We have the ability to change people’s mood by suing empathy and a positive mind. Life is hard, there is no doubt about it, but we can help one another find some positive in negative situations. Going into a problem with a “I got this and will be stronger when I get through this” attitude will enable us to face a problem easier. Going in with this type of attitude is not always easy, especially when you face challenges that feel devastating at the moment.

No one is prepared for harsh life events and many times we are caught off guard. Our first reaction is a normal reaction. Once the initial shock is calming down, this is the time to take a step back, do an attitude adjustment and plan you way to change your thought process. Having an, “I can get through this,” attitude is everything. Oh yes….I can hear you saying, “It’s not that easy! You have no idea how hard this is!” But I do understand how hard it is, it isn’t a simple process but, you CAN do it with a positive attitude.

One last note I’d like to remind you of when going through life challenges…..Surround yourself with positive people. I don’t mean they have to be positive all the time, but when someone vents and the other people you surround yourself with are also negative, you don’t have chance to turn your negative into a positive. We all need the ying/yang relationships (wink) with friends, family and co-workers. If someone is in a negative space, be the positive for them and vice versa, this makes for an amazing relationship.
