Don’t Let Fear Own You

The word “fear” is a scary word in itself. When we hear the word “fear,” our mind starts thinking of all the things we are scared of. I still fear things like, loud unexpected noises, someone sneaking up on me (unintentionally), awaiting medical tests, or parachuting out of a plane (yes I did it once as it was on my bucket list, but I wouldn’t do it again…lol.) When I am faced with fear that I HAVE control of, such as leaving a job to do something I believe I will thrive at, I take into consideration….if I don’t take a chance on doing something I love to do, how will I ever know if I will succeed?

I use to think “fear” was such a scary word. I now think the work “fear” as a challenge word, a word that makes me smile because I want to prove my “fear” feelings wrong. What I am saying is……sometimes we let fear get in the way of our progressing to become a better “self.” When we let fear hold us back, we tend to regret our decision later on down the road. The fear we allowed to take over our strength became a…. “what if I,” “if I only,” “I should have,” or “I could have.” We end up having regrets because we didn’t challenge our fear.

I am not saying we should challenge all fears, some fears are best to stay in the back and other fears that can improve our life, while making our dreams a reality, need to be visited. Facing our fears should be done in steps so not to make us anxious. As a “list” person, I like to write down my fears I faced, if any, during the day in my journal and think about small steps I can take to diminish the fear and gain control and freedom of the fear.

For example, I use to worry about what people thought about the errors I made in my life. I feared being judged. I feared people would look down on me, and you know what……I have learned people have faced the same fears and admire people who speak out and help others to overcome the same fears. When we face our fears, we are courageous.

Some steps to help overcome your fears are:

  1. Write down your fears when you experience them.
  2. Write down what steps you can take to overcome your fear(s).
  3. Ask for help from friends or family with your steps to overcome your fears, if needed.
  4. Write down all the positives you would gain if you overcame said fear(s).
  5. Visualize what your life would be like without the fear(s).
  6. Know you have the strength to achieve what you set your mind to.
